QUESTION no. 4
Dear participants, we prolonged the time for sending answers until 28th of February!
Now we publish the fourth question – this time asked by Mrs. Andreia Avila representing FORESTIS organization from Portugal – the host of this year’s European Final of YPEF contest
please find below the text of the question asked by Mrs. Avila.
In Portugal the forest area with Castanea sativa has more representativeness in the North, particularly in Trás-os-Montes region. Today sweet chestnuts assume the role of ex-libris tree of the local landscape. This prominence is given by the visual grander of the sweet chestnuts stands and also of the isolated individuals which by is rusticity take a patrimonial and landscape value. The longevity of this tree it’s one of the most markable proprieties being able to live for thousands of years. We have so notable sweet chestnuts in our country, extraordinary for its size, age and rarity.
The areas for timber production in our country are called ‘Castinçais’, while the areas, essentially producing fruit are called ‘Soutos’. In Portugal, most of the area with Castanea sativa is occupied by ‘Soutos’. They are a source of quality wood and abundant production of fruit.
Its fruit is the main dry fruit produced in Portugal.
So I have the questions for you:
1. What is the name of the Castanea sativa fruit?
2. What is it used for?
3. Sweet chestnuts are a source of quality wood for what industries?
We are waiting for your answers (please send them to office@ypef.eu) until 22nd of February 2013. Then from all correct answers the contest commission will draw three, which will be rewarded.
You can find the detailed rules of the mini contest here:
